Every designer and developer has used it. "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." — the famous placeholder text that fills mockups, wireframes, and templates around the world. But where does it come from? What does it actually mean? And should you still be using it in 2025?
The Origin of Lorem Ipsum
Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not random gibberish. It is derived from "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a philosophical treatise written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. The text has been used as placeholder copy since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a section of Cicero's work to create a type specimen book.
The standard Lorem Ipsum passage used since the 16th century begins with:
"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua."
What Does It Actually Mean?
The original Cicero passage, from Section 1.10.32, translates roughly to:
"Nor is there anyone who loves, pursues, or desires pain itself because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure some great pleasure."
The Lorem Ipsum version is a scrambled, truncated version of this text. Some words are altered, added, or removed, making it nonsensical Latin — which is precisely the point. It looks enough like real text to simulate a finished page without distracting the reader with meaningful content.
Why Use Lorem Ipsum?
- Focus on design: Readable content in a mockup causes stakeholders to focus on the words instead of the layout, typography, and spacing.
- Natural text distribution: Lorem Ipsum has a roughly natural distribution of letter frequencies and word lengths, making it look like real text at a glance.
